Best portable air conditioner for a bedroom
Your bedroom is unbearable to sleep in during a heatwave, and you are deciding whether a portable air conditioner is worth the box, the hose and the noise, or whether a fan would genuinely do.

Not tested by us — researched. Every pick below states its drawback too.
Portable air conditioners get sold on their BTU number, and that is the wrong first question for a bedroom. Almost every model sold for home use is single-hose: it vents hot air out through a window kit and pulls replacement air back into the room through gaps around doors and skirting, which means it never cools as efficiently as the number on the box implies. What actually decides whether one works for you is whether your window suits the vent kit, whether you can live with a compressor running a few feet from your head overnight, and whether the room is small and sealed enough for the unit to keep up at all. If any of those is a hard no, a decent fan plus reducing heat gain during the day — blackout curtains, windows shut while the sun is on them — will often get you further than a struggling AC unit, for a fraction of the price, the noise and the floor space.
What we weighed
- Cooling capacity against your actual room size in square metres, not the marketing claim on the box
- What the window kit needs, and whether your window can take it
- Noise while running, since this is the one spec that decides whether you can sleep next to it
- Floor footprint in what is usually the smallest room being cooled in the house
- Published specifications, customer feedback patterns, warranty terms and professional reviews
Our picks
-
De'Longhi Pinguino Compact PAC ES72
Best overall for a bedroomResearch-based pick how we chooseRated for rooms up to around 25m² (60m³), which covers most standard UK bedrooms without the unit working flat out. It runs on R290, a lower-impact refrigerant gas, carries a Class A energy rating, and the window kit is included rather than a separate purchase. It also dehumidifies and runs as a fan-only mode, so it earns its floor space outside heatwave weeks too.
Who it’s for: Standard UK double bedrooms up to roughly 25m², where all-round quieter running matters more than maximum cooling power.
Worth knowing: It is still a single-hose unit, so it never cools as efficiently as a fixed split system, and published noise figures for this model vary between sources — check current reviews for the specific noise level before assuming it is whisper-quiet enough for a light sleeper.
- Window kit included
- R290 lower-impact refrigerant
- Doubles as a dehumidifier and fan

Russell Hobbs RHPAC11001
Best for a larger or harder-to-cool bedroomResearch-based pick how we chooseAn 11,000 BTU 2-in-1 air conditioner and dehumidifier rated for rooms up to around 21m², with a remote control and its own window sealing kit. The extra power over a compact unit is genuinely useful in a bigger room, a loft bedroom, or one that holds heat badly.
Who it’s for: Larger bedrooms, loft rooms, or anyone who has already found a compact unit could not keep up.
Worth knowing: More cooling power comes from a bigger, heavier unit and a higher running cost — it draws around 1200W, meaningfully more than a compact model — so it is worth confirming your room actually needs the extra capacity before buying on BTU number alone.
- More cooling power for bigger or hotter rooms
- Remote control
- Window sealing kit included
We have not physically tested these products. Picks are chosen by researching published specifications, customer feedback, warranty and support terms, and professional reviews — the labels above (“Best overall”, “Best value”) are our recommendation, not a score from a rating system. Each button opens an Amazon UK search for that exact model rather than a fixed product page, so the link keeps working when Amazon changes or replaces a listing — check the price, seller and delivery on Amazon before buying.
Common questions
- Do I need a window for a portable air conditioner?
- Effectively yes. Almost every portable air conditioner sold for home use is single-hose and vents hot air outside through the included window kit — without a window it can vent through (and one that seals reasonably well once the kit is fitted), the unit cannot get rid of the heat it is removing from the room, and it will not cool properly.
- Would a fan work instead?
- A fan does not lower the room temperature — it moves air across your skin so you feel cooler, which is a different mechanism entirely. In a small, well-shaded room, a fan plus cutting daytime heat gain (blackout curtains, windows shut while the sun is on them, doors closed) is often enough, costs a fraction as much, makes far less noise and takes no floor space. A portable air conditioner earns its keep when the room genuinely will not cool down with airflow alone, or when night-time temperatures stay high for days at a time.
- Have you tested these?
- No. We have not bought or used these products. These picks come from published specifications, patterns in customer feedback, warranty and support terms, and professional reviews from publications that do test. We say so rather than letting you assume otherwise.
