Portable air conditioners get sold on their BTU number, and that is the wrong first question for a bedroom. Almost every model sold for home use is single-hose: it vents hot air out through a window kit and pulls replacement air back into the room through gaps around doors and skirting, which means it never cools as efficiently as the number on the box implies. What actually decides whether one works for you is whether your window suits the vent kit, whether you can live with a compressor running a few feet from your head overnight, and whether the room is small and sealed enough for the unit to keep up at all. If any of those is a hard no, a decent fan plus reducing heat gain during the day — blackout curtains, windows shut while the sun is on them — will often get you further than a struggling AC unit, for a fraction of the price, the noise and the floor space.

Do I need a window for a portable air conditioner?
Effectively yes. Almost every portable air conditioner sold for home use is single-hose and vents hot air outside through the included window kit — without a window it can vent through (and one that seals reasonably well once the kit is fitted), the unit cannot get rid of the heat it is removing from the room, and it will not cool properly.
Would a fan work instead?
A fan does not lower the room temperature — it moves air across your skin so you feel cooler, which is a different mechanism entirely. In a small, well-shaded room, a fan plus cutting daytime heat gain (blackout curtains, windows shut while the sun is on them, doors closed) is often enough, costs a fraction as much, makes far less noise and takes no floor space. A portable air conditioner earns its keep when the room genuinely will not cool down with airflow alone, or when night-time temperatures stay high for days at a time.
